Mindfulness and Happiness – Waking Up to Life

Neuroscience and spiritual traditions tell us that human beings go through life “sleepwalking” – a state of being in which we are not fully present to life. Most of our ways of thinking, feeling, speaking and acting are automatic. We don’t have thoughts – thoughts have us; we don’t have feelings – feelings have us. This is a source of unhappiness. Our attention is focused on the past or the future. Where life occurs is in the moment. Developing a practice of mindfulness, in which we observe ourselves, others and circumstances without judgment is a valuable process in accessing happiness.

The Path – Full Attention

Full attention means putting your energy into whatever you do, fully. That, in essence, means doing one thing at a time, steadily, focussed and with mindfulness. If you put a book down, or put the garbage out, doing that with as much awareness as if you were attending a yoga class or a tai chi class.
