Direction is the leader’s first order of business. If the people being led don’t know the direction of the company, how do they know where to follow? How do they know where to go? Which way is success? Can I even get there from here? We begin by working directly with the highest level of leadership. In some organizations, this is the board of directors; in others, it is the executive or management team. Whichever applies, it is crucial that it be the highest level. We find most management teams that report to a board don’t have a clearly defined direction they operate from, which obviously creates many problems.
